What is the bigger problem that we use foreign oil, or that we only have one energy source?

Republicans keep pointing out that we need to drill at home. While Democrats say we should take advantage of being a capitalism and end oil's monopoly on being our only energy source.

Does anyone seriously believe that more oil is better? What is the bigger problem that we use foreign oil, or that we only have one energy source?
The bigger problem is that we only have one source.

One source has produced the ridiculous situation we are in today - a few speculators and we start losing jobs. Who controls the speculators? Could be the:

-oil industry

-a few financial analysts out to make a billions for themselves

-OPEC

-terrorists (remember, OBL has $300 million at his disposal)

By having the capacity to move among oil, gas, wind, solar etc we become a more secure nation.

So, how come Republicans did ot renew solar/wind tax credits? Whose side are then on?What is the bigger problem that we use foreign oil, or that we only have one energy source?
This question isn't well framed. Oil only approaches a near monopoly status in the transportation segment of the economy.

Over time, enhanced productivity reduces the amount of energy required per $ of GNP. However, over time, GDP grows fast enough that the overall energy use still increases despite the gain in energy efficiency.

Given the scale of the US economy and its current distribution of energy resources, there is no feasible way to substitute for oil in anything less than a generation. And in the meantime, more oil will be required, wherever it comes from.
We need to do everything at home. That is our economies problem. We send all of our economy overseas and gave our economy to the world on a silver platter and now we are not self sufficient.

We should start investing in other ways to produce oil so that when it happens we aren't standing there starring at each other like, what happened? But no, oil companies run the world, they have all the money and they are not going to do anything to take money out of there own pockets. So, it is up to us as consumers and citizens to start looking for alternative means.
oil isn't our only energy source. it's the most effective one. i think the problem is both. but no need to drill drill drill. lets drill and invest in other sources. open up the drill sites as they are needed. right now there is areas that have oil and are not being drilled. and more refining could help too.
Yes. It goes along with the simple economical theory: supply and demand. While we would get a better result from increasing supply and decreasing demand, it's not very realistic. By increasing the supply alone, it will still have an effect on gas prices.
More oil for now is better for each and every consumer. Alternative energy is better, but it's in the beginning stages and until it has evolved we need help now. Comprende?
The reason to at one time to go abroad was that oil was easier/cheaper to get there, even considering the transportation costs to the USA. What has changed that? Sustainable alternatives are now the only survival course.
Oil's not our only energy source - it's the main transportation fuel but only 7% of US households heat with it and only 2% of our electricity is generated with it.
Our own oil would only be a temporary fix. We need to set up the proper infrastructure in this country to use multiple energy sources.
Having one source of energy is the greatest obstacle this nation faces.

ANY investor worth his degree will tell you that you should diversify for long term financial ';health';.
BOTH.................WE NEED TO DRILL NOW TO BUY TIME...BUT, WE,D BETTER START PLANNING FOR OPTIONS...THE NEXT OIL SHORTAGE MAY NOT GIVE US THE OPTION OF TIME WE NEED TO INVENT ANOTHER SOURCE........................
I seriously believe that you don't know very much about our energy sources or policies.
They don't have nuclear or coal burning cars yet. Green energy is still only a wish.
