Is home heating oil the same as diesel fuel? the red colored diesel used in cars and trucks?

is it ok to burn diesel in my furnace? Is home heating oil the same as diesel fuel? the red colored diesel used in cars and trucks?
Some of the people answering this question don't know anything about diesel fuel and home heating fuel !!! To answer your question red colored diesel fuel is for off road use[farm tractors and other machines off road] Home heating oil is also dyed red as well Kerosene. On road diesel and off road diesel as well as home heating oil all used to be the same thing. Now in many states on road diesel has had most of the sulfur removed. This does not change the way it burns in a diesel engine or a furnace.Any home heating oil fired unit can burn on road, off road or Kerosene with no problems and with out having to change anything and IDIOTS that tell you it can not be done do not know what they are talking about. I see I must have touched a nerve with one of the Idiots and got a thunbs down!Is home heating oil the same as diesel fuel? the red colored diesel used in cars and trucks?
No. 2 Fuel oil, off-road and on-road diesel are all almost the same. The difference is that No.2 fuel oil has a low cetane number and burns slightly cooler that the others. Off-road diesel is a high sulfur diesel used in farm tractors etc. On-road diesel is high cetane an low sulfur. They can mix Report Abuse

Absolutely not! Please don't mix. There are many different grades of fuel oil, ranging from #1 fuel oil (which is essentially a kerosene) to #6 fuel oil which is a heavy (high-boiling point) fuel oil used for maritime bunker oil. As a very broad generality: diesel oil, #2 fuel oil, distillate fuel oil and home heating oil are all names for essentially the same product.

Any ';idiot'; who says they are interchangeable didn't read the question!! Go ahead and mix them if you want - write back after you do and let us know how it turns out!
No it is not the same thing.
red fuel oil is #2 fuel oil...as another said it is dyed red to mark it ';no tax, or off road';.

must diesel fuel for summertime use is #2 fuel oil.

there is no difference. if you are going to burn diesel fuel, at least go to a station that sells no tax fuel.

by the way the, fuel oil is graded by specific gravity, wax content, and clarity. the most expensive is ';jet a';....jet fuel....then #1 or K1 kerosene, #1 fuel oil, #2 fuel oil.....and so on

There is a differance but depending on your application you could use car fuel in a heating system. It might smell, and burn hotter.
Go by the answer given by Scott_k. Can't give a better answer that what he did.
