What are the bad effects of un-disposed used motor oil and what is the proper way to dispose it?

I have and assignment on this, but i cant seem to find the info im looking for. What are the bad effects of un-disposed used motor oil and what is the proper way to dispose it?
Used oil only goes one of three places:

a) clutters up your garage (that's me, lol!)

b) gets dumped in the environment somewhere, poisoning the soil and causing heavy-metal contamination

c) gets recycled, and turned into usable oil again.

Generally there's nothing wrong with used oil. It's still oil. It's just contaminated with soot, heavy metals (from bearing surfaces) and its additives have broken down, so in a small engine like an automobile, it needs to be changed. Locomotives never change their oil, they just sample it and run a spectroscopy to look for evidence of any engine problems. What are the bad effects of un-disposed used motor oil and what is the proper way to dispose it?
look for waste oil on your search

it can cause cancer if touched for a prolonged time

it can get in the underground water supply if dumped illegally

as a toxin, it can affect the function of several internal organs if ingested

take it to a recognized reclamation center where it will be either recycled or burned as a source of fuel in heaters.
Anyone caught dumping used motor oil in the environment will be shot on sight.

Or you could just get a fine. If you don't get caught, you should feel Very Very guilty.

Take it to anyplace that changes oil. They'll take it off your hands for free. Unless they're an Ahol. Then leave it on their doorstep when they're closed.
Turn it into the oil Co. They will put it back in the oil stream and process it again.
